Whats your earliest memory associated with what you do now?
I was 10 or 12 years old and I would make drinks, cocktails, for my parents, friends, and family at their parties. You know, as a joke. I had no idea what I was mixing, I just remember wanting to make beautifully colored, layered drinks. Which meant a lot of Roses Grenadine. I guess at that point it was written, I wanted to be a bartender. What’s true then is still true now, while I know a bit (a lot) more about how to make a tasty drink, I still value making beautiful, visually stimulating drinks.
When did it become real for you?
When I as 23, after just getting into cocktail bars, I took my parents to one in my hometown of Portland, Oregon. Beaker and Flask, which has since closed. We were drinking Congac sazeracs. My parents had never had a modern craft cocktail, they were impressed. My mom asked me if I could see myself doing this in the future, I took that as permission.
